The MP-21C's output quality is impressive for such a small, portable unit, but no better than entry-level compared to that of most full-sized ink jet models.The printer is easy to install and use. Its chief drawbacks are its print quality and relatively slow speed. I timed the MP-21C at approximately 2 minutes per page on text and mixed graphics in its normal (360dpi) print mode. At 720dpi, output speed slows down significantly to between 7 and 10 minutes per page. Text and graphics on plain paper at 360dpi had acceptable draft quality. Stepping up to coated paper at 720dpi enhanced text clarity and color definition, but not to the level of a full-sized ink jet. Photographs showed mild banding and some grainy quality, even on $1-a-sheet glossy paper.The MP-21C uses two $32 ink cartridges-one supplying black and cyan (good for 250 pages at 5% saturation), the other supplying magenta and yellow (yielding 150 pages at 5% saturation).Because the 4.17-by-11.81-by-2-inch MP-21C connects to notebook computers through its bundled PC Card controller, you don't need an external power adapter, and the unit imposes no significant drain on notebook battery life.If portability and convenience are more important to you than speed and print quality, the Brother MP-21C may be just what you're looking for.
